R & R for VETS JOHANNES’ PROJECT: With immense enthusiasm, we are sharing the noteworthy journey that starts with a Santa Fe Habitat for Humanity referral. It evolves into a collaborative project, where our organization takes on the crucial responsibility of replacing the roof. Habitat for Humanity dedicates its efforts to interior repairs, making this collaboration extraordinary.

Moreover, Habitat for Humanity, alongside a team of dedicated Wells Fargo volunteers, installs drywall and paints much of the second floor of Johannes’s home. In brief, Wells Fargo boasts an impressive three-decade history of profound vision, championing a world where everyone enjoys living in a decent and secure home.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY AND R & R FOR VETS: PARTNERING FOR A SAFE HAVEN – R & R for VETS JOHANNES PROJECT

As we pour our hearts and souls into this project, we are unaware of a dire situation lurking beneath the surface, waiting to be uncovered. We only get to speak with Johannes about his plans for the project’s conclusion. Essentially, what we discover is heartbreaking.

For months, Johannes has been trudging to his neighbors’ homes, collecting water to meet his daily needs. This revelation strikes us like lightning—another emergency that demands immediate attention. Consequently, the root of the problem is a malfunctioning well pump, and we know we have to act swiftly.

Subsequently, Habitat for Humanity facilitates contact between R & R for Vets and Kuckelman Pump Service-Acculectric. Without a moment’s delay, Johannes gets running water in his home. It’s a transformative moment, and the essence of the story becomes clear. Johannes now possesses a “DRY HOME” and a “SAFE HOME”—a sanctuary this veteran truly deserves

R & R for VETS JOHANNES’ PROJECT – HIS PASSIONS IN LIFE

In 1957, Edward Johannes enlisted in the US Navy. Moreover, Johannes proudly talks about his service when stationed at the Ninth Naval District in Great Lakes, Illinois, where he serves as a photographer. Examples portraying his lifetime’s history adorn every wall on the first floor of his home, transforming it into his private gallery. Indeed, his home becomes a vivid tapestry of his adventures at sea, capturing everything from the serene to the turbulent moments of naval life. Each photograph not only tells a story but also showcases his extraordinary talent. He is gifted, using his keen eye and camera to freeze moments of history and personal moments.

COMPASSION IN ACTION: OUR VETERANS DESERVE SO MUCH MORE FROM OUR COMMUNITIES

Johannes, despite facing hardships, never complains. Above all, records show he lives on a meager income. A television sits in the living room, but he cannot afford TV service. Moreover, he owns an old car but rarely drives it due to gas costs.

During our project, we frequently visit to ensure the quality of the work. We notice his hunger and even a fruitful apple tree. Therefore, we offer to make apple pies. Surprisingly, he generously gives us a bushel of apples. Consequently, he receives apple pies and apple sauce from us.

Additionally, during our visits, we bring fully-cooked dinners and bags of groceries. We also assist him in finding food assistance resources in our city. This act serves as our reminder that our veterans deserve better from our community.

Furthermore, in sincere gratitude, Johannes gives co-founder Ken Dettelbach his copy of Stanley Karnow’s book “Vietnam-A History-The First Complete Account of Vietnam at War.” Ken uses this already-highlighted book filled with notes in his presentations to Santa Fe High School students.

TESTIMONIAL – R & R for VETS JOHANNES PROJECT

I wish to thank R & R For Vets and Santa Fe Habitat for Humanity for their collaboration in providing and coordinating a solution to my severely damaged roof, resulting in water seeping into the house. This situation was becoming severe for me. I now have A DRY HOME – A SAFE HOME. I have a brand-new roof. And, because of the volunteers from Wells Fargo, repairs have been made to the ceilings. All of you have made a remarkable difference in the quality of my life. This vet thanks you from the bottom of his heart.” Edward J. Johannes.
