Through ANGELA’S PROJECT, R & R for VETS initiatives highlights the significant contributions of women in the Army, with Angela serving as a prime example. As a young woman, she enlists in the Army, serving alongside her then-husband at the Oakland Army Base in California. Angela earns Army Service ribbons for her exceptional skills in sharpshooting, hand grenades, and rifle marksmanship. However, pregnancy changes her path, leading her to decide to terminate her service in April 1981 with an honorable discharge. Moreover, with the added responsibilities of caring for a young family, Angela faces life’s challenges after divorce. Her journey is difficult, and she now lives in a 1982 trailer. She urgently needs help to make it ‘A DRY HOME—A SAFE HOME.’ Angela connects to R & R for VETS through a Santa Fe Habitat for Humanity referral. She lives outside the city limits of Santa Fe.

R&R for VETS ANGELA’S PROJECT – BRAVE PLEA FOR HELP: TRANSFORMING AN UNSAFE HOME INTO A SAFE HAVEN

R&R for Vets Angela's ProjectRecognizing the urgency of her situation, Angela courageously reaches out for help. Given that, she is currently caring for her two grandchildren. It’s crucial to emphasize that this trailer does not provide the safety and comfort of a dry and secure home.  In this case, it is an immediate emergency requiring swift intervention. The floor in the kitchen and bathroom is rotting out. Our organization is ready to act swiftly.

Thankfully, contractor Tom Medina secures a favorable price for the necessary flooring materials and begins work to rectify these pressing issues promptly. However, it is crucial to stress that more action and support are still desperately needed.

URGENT ROOF RESCUE: ANGELA’S HOME CRISIS DEMANDS IMMEDIATE ACTION

Our years of experience show that applicants often come to us too late due to insufficient funds and resources. In Angela’s case, her rotting floors’ root cause traces back to her roof. Over the years, she has hired individuals lacking the necessary expertise or those who take advantage of her, believing she is saving money. Unfortunately, unlicensed professionals have failed to properly repair the roof, leading to additional problems.

Upon inspecting the roof, the contractor concludes that Angela’s roof is beyond repair and needs a complete replacement. This situation is urgent. Without a new roof, all efforts to restore the floors will prove futile. The estimated cost of a new roof stands at approximately ten thousand dollars. R & R for VETS is actively seeking fundraising support for this critical project.
